How do you build a web page?

This page was written in code. Your browser (perhaps Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) reads that code and puts all of the words and graphics on the page right where they are supposed to be. You probably don't want to learn all of the software code just to make a web page and luckily, you don't have to.

Software programs make web page design a lot easier now. Your page is put together in a graphic layout where you see how everything fits together and the software writes all of the code.

Of course, there is still some work involved and if you really don't like computers you are probably better off letting someone else do the work. However, if you take the time to learn even a little bit of that code, your pages will look great.

What software do you need?

There are many page layout programs but I will mention only two, Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver. These two have most of the market and cover a wide range of page design needs. FrontPage, is a little easier to master, though if you are starting from scratch your efforts might be better directed at the best long term solution. With FrontPage, you can build fine looking web sites and it can do many of the things you'll need. It is very affordable and costs a bit less than Dreamweaver.

Dreamweaver is the tool of the professional web builder or anyone who is serious about turning out great looking sites. It is part of the Macromedia Studio package which also includes Flash Professional, Fireworks, Contribute and Flashpaper. If you intend to use Flash, go with Dreamweaver since the integration of the two programs makes it easier to implement. Dreamweaver also makes the use of style sheets considerably easier and that is a major benefit since their use makes site redesign or even small changes infinitely easier. A little more effort is necessary when first learning to use it, the effort is well rewarded with high level and professional results.

If your skills and experience rise to the level where you can tell the difference or if you plan to develop your ability beyond the basics, Dreamweaver is the better choice.

What about graphic software?

Is a picture worth a thousand words? ... well, maybe, but few web pages are totally graphic free. Some basic programs like Photoshop Elements are fine for the occasional web site builder who just wants to set up a web page quickly for personal use. If your web site is business oriented then professional software is the order of the day. Adobe Photoshop is best known in this area and deserves the recognition, there is little it cannot do. To get the most out of it you will need to put in considerable time and effort, not a bad thing, just be aware that loading it on your computer will not magically enhance your powers.

Macromedia Fireworks, designed to work hand in hand with Dreamweaver, is an excellent program that was built specifically for working on the web. The difference shows. We previously used Photoshop and were quite happy with it but once we installed Macromedia Studio and began using Fireworks, we never looked back.

Software:

Dreamweaver is a great standalone program but it works even better when combined with all of the other software included in the Macromedia Studio suite. The all new Studio 8 includes Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, Fireworks, Contribute and Flashpaper. With Studio 8 you can easily jump from graphic design in Fireworks to web design in Dreamweaver. If you are going to include Flash, it's just a click away. If you are planning on using more than one Macromedia program, go with the Studio Suite. The price of any two programs is almost what you will pay for the Studio suite and the combined capability of all of the programs together is truly breathtaking. We use the Studio suite. If you are serious about web design, look no further. This is it.
